Special Educational Needs & Disabilities

Mrs. Ashleigh Booth is the schools SENDCo (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Co-Ordinator) and Designated Teacher for LAC (Looked After Children) lead. For any enquiries for Mrs. Booth, please email them to abooth@newton.derbyshire.sch.uk

The designated school governor for SEND and LAC is Erika Thornhill.

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can affect a child or young person’s ability to learn. They can affect their:

  • behaviour or ability to socialise, for example they struggle to make friends
  • reading and writing, for example because they have dyslexia
  • ability to understand things
  • concentration levels, for example because they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • physical ability

If you have any queries or concerns, or wish to discuss your child's special educational needs and provision, please contact your child's teacher as early as possible.  They will speak to the SENDCo, Mrs. Booth, in person, by telephone 01773 872384 or email abooth@newton.derbyshire.sch.uk who may then arrange to meet with you in order to discuss this further.  We understand that children can be different at school to home and we will always listen to your concerns and work with you to support your child and you as their family. You may also contact Mrs Thornhill, our SEND Governor, via email ethornhill@newton.derbyshire.sch.uk.

Children make progress at different rates and have different ways they learn best. Teachers take account of this when they organise lessons and teach. Children making slower progress and/or experiencing difficulties at school compared to others of their age may be given additional or different provision and support to help them succeed.
